During the inbound transit, PSCO was notified from Savannah Pilots that the vessel suffered a loss of propulsion. COTP Order was drafted and issued to the vessel. During the exam, the Master stated that carbon buildup in the fuel injector pump plungers resulted in loss of combustion on 4 out of 7 cylinders. Master stated that the excess carbon buildup occurred as a result of switching to low sulfur MGO. The main engine (19 years old), although overhauled in 2019, was not originally designed for any kind of low sulfur fuel.

Resolution: Class surveyor went on board and ran a series of functional tests on the main engines with tug assists after the fuel injectors had been taken apart and cleaned. Received class report stating the main engine is fully operational.
