What Maury does not do

No page carries a score, a rating, a grade, a colour, or an opinion about any vessel's condition or seaworthiness. Every figure on a vessel page is a count of records the Coast Guard wrote, or a date it recorded. A computed status was built once, tested against forty years of records, and deleted, because it was wrong too often to publish.

A vessel with few inspections, or none, may simply not have been inspected, or may have been inspected under a class this site does not cover. 56.1% of inspection records carry no inspection type at all, three date ranges are missing because the Coast Guard's export failed, and a hull absent from the record for years is a hull absent from the record. Nothing more is implied.

“No resolution recorded” means the record holds no resolution date. Many deficiencies are corrected on the spot and never written up again. Maury shows the blank and does not fill it either way. The same holds for an operational control with no removal date: the record has no date on which it was lifted, and that is all it says.

The archive holds vessels the Coast Guard classes as Barge or Towing Vessel. A hull that is a barge in every practical sense but is filed under another class is not here. 41.1% of the records come from a single Coast Guard district, so this is predominantly a record of the Mississippi–Ohio inland river system. An operator page records which hulls a company filed, and never how those hulls fared. No casualty, deficiency or control figure is published for a named operator, and populations are published only where no single company's record could be read out of them.
