01 1138 - Gas Carriers - Gas detection equipment should be so designed that it may readily be tested. Suitable equipment and span gas for this purpose should be carried onboard. The vessel did not have the appropriate equipment onboard to test the fixed gas detection in the motor room. The crew was using a plastic grocery sack instead of the proper cap which connects to the span gas bottle. 74SOLAS (14CONS) VII/13.1 IAW Ref: IGC 93/13.6.6
