The sampling pipe arrangements shall be such that the location of the fire can be readily identified. 2535–The ship’s SMS outlines procedures for periodic inspections of the cargo hold smoke extraction system. However, no provisions are made for the disconnection of the sampling pipes to the detection unit in any maintenance instructions. Various reports from crew members suggest that the system was disabled in March of 2017 when dust accumulation in the pipes caused alarms on the repeater panel on the navigation bridge.
