Vessel's ship's service transformers shall meet the requirements of automatic transfer 46 CFR 62.50-30(b) automatic transfer. Redundant vital auxiliaries and power sources must automatically transfer to the backup units upon failure of the operating units. 46 CFR 62 is applicable to MSP vessels as per NVIC 01-13 (CH-1). Vessel was operating on #1 ship's service transformer closed bus on medium voltage switchboard. Upon under-voltage trip of the #1 transformer, the vessel lost power and propulsion. Upon MI attendance it was identified as per manufacturer requirement that the vessel shall operate with both ship's service transformers online with the medium voltage (440V) switchboard in split bus configuration. The loss of either transformer does not initiate start of standby equipment due to split configuration, which causes loss of power and propulsion. The ship's electrical power system must be configured so that continuity of supply is provided to automatically switch over to stand-by vital devices.
