The condition of the ship and its equipment shall be maintained to conform with the provisions of the present regulations to ensure that the ship in all respects will remain fit to proceed to sea without danger to the ship or persons on board. This office received a report that the M/V MAERSK EINDHOVEN noted rudder drop indicative of a thrust collar issue, that has prompted the vessel’s operator to consider the steering system a risk that necessitates a dead ship tow. The vessel is therefore not fit to transit in its current condition.

Resolution: Class report provided attesting to repairs to wear and thrust bearings. Contributing factor of wear was determined to be lack of lubrication. Blockage in the lubrication system was removed. Steering gear and bearing greasing pump operate properly.
