Each portable fire extinguisher on a vessel must be of an approved type. The minimum number of portable fire extinguishers required on a vessel must be acceptable to the cognizant Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection, but must not be fewer than the minimum number required by table 1 to § 181.500(b) and other provisions of this section. The required 40-B:C fire extinguishers for the machinery space exits were not present. Replaced current portable extinguishers installed at machinery space exits with 40-B:C extinguishers.

At each inspection for certification and at every other vessel inspection all observed unsafe practices, fire hazards, and other hazardous situations must be corrected and all required guards and protective devices must be in satisfactory condition. Vessel's reverse cycle heating system was overheating, producing smoke at the heat pump.

A space containing diesel machinery must be fitted with at least two ducts to furnish natural or powered supply and exhaust ventilation. The total inlet area and total outlet area may not be less than one square inch for each foot of beam of the vessel. There is only one ventilation opening into the space that serves as supply. Provide a separate duct for exhaust ventilation. Operator must ensure space is adequately ventilated prior to starting generator.
