To stop the flow of fuel in the event of a fire or break in the fuel line on every towing vessel, a remote fuel shutoff valve must be fitted on any fuel line that supplies fuel directly to a propulsion engine or generator prime mover in accordance with 46 CFR 143.260. During an operational test of the fuel shut off valve, it was determined that the cock valve was not closing completely. This was verified when the shut off valve was fully closed and the generator ran for additional 20 minutes before the fuel was secured. Make repairs and demonstrate proper operation of the emergency fuel shut off to the satisfaction of an attending Coast Guard Marine Inspector prior to October 6, 2023.
