A fixed fire detection and fire alarm system and a sample extraction smoke detection system required in this regualtion and other regulations in this part shall be of an approved type and comply with the fire safety systems code.
Any required system shall be capable of continuous operation at all times...
PSCO observed a fault displayed on the smoke extraction system panel. The chief engineer explained that the system was not operational due to water damage. The display screen read Fault: detector -01 -02 -03 -04 -05 -06

Resolution: Smoke detectors are only required while carrying dangerous goods. Vessel is currently only carrying corn. Ship will receive spare parts to make permanent repairs in Japan.
