An existing vessel may be deemed by the OCMI, or TPO to be in compliance with this subpart provided that either: the vessel is built, equipped, and maintained to conform to the rules of a recognized classification society appropriate for the intended service and routes. The vessel's barge hit into a sharp metal angle on the pier at Cliffs Northshore Mining which caused a 4"x1" hole and a 14" inset at about the 23' draft reading adjacent to the No. 8 starboard ballast tank. Vessel must send a repair proposal to Class and USCG and have approved by both Class and USCG prior to carrying out repairs.

In general, compliance with the standards established by the American Bureau of shipping, will be considered as satisfactory evidence of the structural efficiency of the vessel. The vessel hit into a sharp metal angle on the pier at Cliffs Northshore Mining which caused Frame 88 in the starboard pump room to buckle and longitudinals connected to the frame moving 6' forward to bend. Vessel must complete permanent repairs to the damaged area at winter drydock prior to 2025 shipping season.

Upon the delivery of the MICHIGAN TRADER the towing vessel DIRK S VANENKEVORT (949095) forming a part of this ATB Unit was not available to determine compliance with navigation bridge visibility when the tug is connected to the barge. Prior to the MICHIGAN TRADER operating with the DIRK S VANENKEVORT the visibility requirements must be verified for this ATB unit by an attending Coast Guard Marine Inspector.
