The marine employer must have a sufficient number of alcohol testing devices readily accessible to determine the presence of alcohol in the system of each individual who was directly involved in the SMI. Procure alcohol testing strips.

A vessel must carry either a first aid kit approved under 199.175 (b)(10) or a kit with the equivalent equipment. Vessel's aspirin was expired. Replace with 50 tablets of ibuprofen as required by updated regulation. 46 CFR 184.710 Code 16 c

A vessel on a rivers route must carry three orange and three red distress flares or six red distress flares approved by 160.021 & 160.037. Vessel had six recreational distress flares with no CG approval number listed. Replace with CG approved distress flares. 46 CFR 180.68 Code 16 c

A vessel must carry one floating water light, unless it is limited to day time operations. Vessels water light had expired batteries. Replaced while on vessel. 46 CFR 180.70 (d) Code 10 c

Portable and semi-portable extinguishers must be inspected and maintained in accordance with NFPA 10. Annual servicing not available and not readily apparent as to when extinguishers were initially placed in service. Prove proper maintenance in accordance with NFPA 10. 46 CFR 176.810(b)(1)

Remote fuel shutoff stations must be marked in clearly legible letters at least 25 millimeters (1 inch) high indicating purpose of the valve and direction of operation. Fuel shutoffs are not labeled. 46 CFR 185.608

As appropriate for the intended voyage, a vessel must carry adequate and up-to-date: (1) Charts of large enough scale to make safe navigation possible. Chart on board not appropriate for navigational use. 46 CFR 184.420

The operator of each self-propelled vessel 12 meters or more in length shall carry, on board and maintain for ready reference, a copy of these Rules. 33 CFR 83.01(g)

All escape hatches and other emergency exits used as means of escape must be marked on both sides in clearly legible letters at least 50 millimeters (2 inches) high: “EMERGENCY EXIT, KEEP CLEAR”, unless such markings are deemed unnecessary by the cognizant [name withheld] port nor starboard exits are labeled as emergency exits. 46 CFR 185.606
