In tankers, electrical equipment, cables and wires shall not be installed in hazardous locations unless it conforms with standards not inferior to those acceptable to the organization. PSCO observed cracked lenses on 100% of explosion proof lights on lowest 02 levels of the cargo pump room, forward superstructure bulkhead, and in vicinity of oxygen & acetylene stores. All explosion proof lenses appear to be cracked directly around clamping hardware, which could suggest the problem is related to type approval or manufacturer defect. Cargo discharge operations are prohibited in the U.S. without local Coast Guard approval or proof from manufacturers that condition of lenses is satisfactory.
