When carbon dioxide is used as the extinguishing medium for machinery spaces of Category A the quantity of gas carried shall be sufficient to give a minimum quantity of free gas equal to the larger of the following quantities … (1) 40 per cent of the gross volume of the largest space … (2) 35 percent of the entire volume of the largest space including the casing. The Machinery space, protected by CO2, has a 3ft x 4ft direct opening into the machine shop which is separated by an “A” class division according to the Fire Control Plan. This large opening does not have closing capabilities. This opening would allow the passage of CO2 through the division and into the machine shop, which is not designated as a CO2 protected space and renders the CO2 fire extinguishing capabilities insufficient.
