Where flexible nonmetallic hose is permitted for use in piping systems by this section, it must meet SAE J–1942 (incorporated by reference; see 46 CFR 175.600) or be specifically approved by the Commandant. Hoses from each engine to the oil pressure gauges were approximately 15 feet of USCG A-1 J-1527 hoses. Replace hoses to gauges with SAE J-1942 hoses.

The number of penetrations in a watertight bulkhead must be minimized. A penetration in a watertight bulkhead must be as high and as far inboard in the bulkhead as practicable, and made watertight. Bolts on engine room supply vent trunks used as maintenance openings located on the port and starboard side of the generator room found missing to allow increased air flow to the engine room. However, this provides a direct opening from the engine room to the generator space which is a watertight bulkhead.
