A vessel must be provided with a main steering gear that is of adequate strength and capable of steering the vessel at all service speeds. Rudder mounting bracket allowed side to side and back and forth movement of the rudder post which caused the gasket to wear prematurely allowing water intrusion at certain speeds. Owner made satisfactory temporary repairs to limit water intrusion. Permanent repairs will have to be made prior to the 2021 operating season.
