While underway carrying passengers en route to Mackinac Island, Captain reported feeling a resistance in the steering system. Upon investigation deckhands found the forward-most chain knuckle in the steering shaft to be cracked. This is the second time in three days the steering had bound up and caused this same knuckle to crack under heavy torsion. Upon inspection, MI found that the steering shaft had shifted approximately 1/4 to 3/8's of an inch at numerous spots along the joints and unions. As well as the key had rolled in the key-way at the section where the shaft reduces from 1 1/2 down to 1 inch. Submit repair proposal to this office for approval in correcting failures occurring in the steering system and, once approved, affect repairs to the satisfaction of the attending Coast Guard Marine Inspector.
