Tubular gauge glasses, if fitted to diesel fuel tanks, must be of heat resistant materials, adequately protected from mechanical damage, and provided at the tank connections with devices that will automatically close in the event of rupture of the gauge or gauge lines. Both Port and Starboard fuel tanks were outfitted with gauge glasses which were unprotected from mechanical damage and lacked devices to automatically close in the event of rupture. Vessel shall keep all valves to and from the gauge glasses closed while underway, until the automatic closure devices are installed and the gauge is suitably protected, to the satisfaction of the attending Marine Inspector.
