Through hull fittings and shutoff valves must be metallic. In the case of nonmetallic hulls, materials that will afford an equal degree of safety and heat resistivity as that afforded by the hull may be approved. A plastic through hull fitting with no valve on the stbd sideshell within the engine room space was found with duct tape and sealant squeezed inside. Provide a wooden plug that can be placed in the through hull, in an emergency, the plug should be stowed immediately adjacent to the thru hull. This is accepted as a temporary means to prevent any water ingress, if needed.

At each initial and subsequent inspection of a vessel the owner or managing operator shall be prepared to conduct tests and have the vessel ready for inspections of the hull structure and its appurtenances, including the following; Masts and similar arrangement constructed on the hull and on a sailing vessel all spars, standing rigging, running rigging, blocks, fittings, and sails. Although the vessel hauls out and down rigs every year, the last documented Coast Guard attendance and inspection of the masts when unstepped was 2012. In accordance with NVIC 02-16, wood masts, spars and appendages should be unstepped once every 10 years. Prior to the vessel operating in 2024, the vessel will need to down rig, unstep and make available for inspection for the Coast Guard all masts, spars, standing rigging, running rigging, blocks, fittings, and sails.
