The discharge ends of fuel tank vent pipes must be fitted with removable flame screens or flame arresters. The flame screens must consist of a single screen of corrosion resistant wire of at least 30 × 30 mesh. The flame screens or flame arresters must be of such size and design as to prevent reduction in the net cross sectional area of the vent pipe and permit cleaning or renewal of the flame screens or arrester elements. No flame screen installed in fuel vent pipe.

For a life float approved under approval series 160.027, a buoyant apparatus may be used to meet requirements for life floats if the buoyant apparatus was installed on board the vessel on or before March 11, 1996, and if the buoyant apparatus remains in good and serviceable condition. One of the two buoyant apparatus present on board the vessel was found with a manufacture date after March 11, 1996. Remove buoyant apparatus and replace with life float approved under approval series 160.027.
