For tankers of 20,000 tonnes deadweight and upwards, the protection of the cargo tanks shall be achieved by a fixed inert gas system in accordance with the requirements of the fire safety systems code. The system shall be capable on inerting empty cargo tanks and maintaining the atmosphere in any partof the tank with an oxygen content not exceeding 8 % by volume and at a positive pressure in port and at seaexcept when it is necessary for such a tank to be gas free.
