The purpose of this regulation is to contain a fire in the space of origin. For this purpose, the following functional requirements shall be met: thermal insulation of boundaries shall have due regard to the fire risk of the space and adjacent spaces. Vessel's overhead above the emergency fire pump had missing structural fire protection (SFP) insulation and did not match rated Class A boundary in accordance with the vessel's approved Fire Control Plan. Vessel must install approved SFP on exposed overhead within 30 days after arrival to first U.S. port.

In addition to complying with the specific provisions for fire integrity of bulkheads and decks of cargo ships, the minimum fire integrity of bulkheads and decks shall be as prescribed in tables 9.5 and 9.6. Two (02) self-closing Class A doors on the Focsle deck didn't fully close to the designed latch/seating. Crew adjusted the self-closing door hardware and restored the Class A fire boundary.
