All the steering gear components shall be of sound and reliable construction to the satisfaction of the Administration. During test of the emergency steering, the steering gear was "surging" or "hunting" in both directions while seeking the requested rudder angle. Problem was corrected on the spot by Cheif Engineer, who found the suction line loose on the #1 port steering gear pump. [SOLAS 2014 II-1/29.2.1]

The Administration may permit the use of oil-level gauges with flat glasses and self-closing valves between the gauges and fuel tanks.
