Each Class 1 door on a vessel must be designed to
withstand a head of water equivalent to the depth from
the sill of the door to the margin line but in no case
less than 10 feet. Vessel was not prepared to test
watertightness. Test in accordance with ASTM F 1196.
Another effective watertight test is the “chalk test.”
Rub chalk on the knife edge of the door frame and close
the door securely. It should leave a continuous chalk
impression on the door gasket. If it is not continuous,
the door requires adjustment or the frame requires
replacement. Conduct testing in accordance with ASTM F
1196 or a chalk test and send results to attending
Marine Inspector with Master attesting to completion.
