The function of fixed fire detection and alarm systems shall be periodically tested to the satisfaction of the administration by means of equipment producing hot air at the appropriate temperature, or smoke or aerosol particles having the appropriate range of density or particle size or other phenomena associated with incipient fires to which the detector is designed to respond.
Fire detection system in Engine Control Room was observed to be blackened. PSCO witnessed crew test detector with open flame.

The company should establish procedures to ensure that the ship is maintained in conformity with the provisions of the relevant rules and regulations and with any additional requirements which may be established.
In accordance with S-0504/7 of ships SMS, no procedures were available to outline testing of fire detectors.
PSCO witnessed crew test heat/fire detector with open flame.
An internal ISM audit and record of correcting actions, including actions to prevent recurrence IAW ISM 10.1 is required.

An alarm system shall be provided indicating any fault requiring attention and shall be capable of sounding an audible alarm in the main machinery control room. PSCO discovered aft engine room bilge alarm not functioning properly.
