Propulsion machinery, including main engines, reduction gears, shafting, bearings, and electrical equipment and systems, must: (1) be maintained to ensure proper operation; (2) be suitable for route and service; and (3) have suitable propulsion controls to provide the operator full control at each operating station.
Vessel reported steering system alarms while conducting operations. After switching from steering system 1 to system 2, the vessel's starboard engine shut down unexpectedly and is not operating properly.
Vessel shall identify cause of steering alarms and loss of starboard engine operation, make repairs, and demonstrate proper operation of the steering system and starboard engine to the satisfaction of an attending CG Marine Inspector and Third Party Organization (TPO) prior to towing operations.
